Why subscribe?
California Upland is a Sunday newsletter for hunters who love the birds they pursue — valley quail, chukar, dove, mountain quail, pheasant, sooty grouse, band-tailed pigeon. We write about California’s upland country: where to find birds, how to read habitat, what gear actually works, and how to protect it all.
One email each Sunday at 6 AM PT. No more than that unless something time-sensitive is in front of us — an opener, a regulation change, a fire on a hunt area.
Written by Matt Gehrmann and Peter Burnham. Peter grew up in Nevada hunting chukar in the Sierras and hunts behind Alan, his English cocker; Matt grew up on Central Valley pheasant, quail, and dove and edits the publication. We started California Upland because the national upland press treats this state as an afterthought, and we wanted a place that didn’t.
Subscribing is free — and the welcome email includes the 2026-27 California Upland Season Dates & Limits Cheatsheet: one page with season dates, daily and possession limits, and lead-free zones.
